It all started this February when the court ruled that the pro-democracy Future Forward Party (FFP) be disbanded for taking an illegal donation. This incident prompted thousands of young Thais to walk to the streets to protest. The protests were then halted by Covid-19 restrictions for safety reasons, but they began again in June when a prominent pro-democracy activist went missing in Cambodia.

In recent months, the protesters have challenged the king’s decision to take personal command of all military units based in Bangkok and to declare Crown wealth as his personal property. Initially, the movement saw protesters expressing their frustration with the government, but the scope grew in August when some activists began calling for reform of the monarchy, discussion of which has long been a taboo topic in Thailand.

The months of protests leading up to the issue of the emergency decree, banning all the demonstrations. However, the protesters ignored the new rules and once again gather in their thousands. "Like dogs cornered, we are fighting till our deaths," said one the high-profile protest leaders. "We won't fall back. We won't run away. We won't go anywhere." To arouse international attention and put pressure on the Thai authorities, protest leaders have been publishing content in different languages across various social media platforms, using hashtags like #WhatsHappeningInThailand.
