Officially known as C/2020 F3, this newly-discovered comet NEOWISE was first spotted by NASA’s NEOWISE satellite in March. After surviving its loop around the sun, it will now be reaching the point in its orbit where it is closest to Earth this week. NEOWISE will remain visible to the naked eye in the northern hemisphere through July, becoming the first visible comet of 2020. Being able to catch a glimpse of the comet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as it won’t pass Earth again for another 6,800 years, according to the International Dark-Sky Association.

To grasp this opportunity, you first have to find a location that’s free of light pollution. “Start looking about 1 hour after sunset in the northwestern horizon. Look about three fists below the bottom of the Big Dipper, and from there perhaps a little to the right,” said the editors of Sky & Telescope in a news release.
