Last weekend, Taiwan had been under the influence of the torrential rain caused by the combined effect of northeasterly winds and Tropical Storm Khanun. Two major highways---the Central Cross-Island Highway as well as Suhua Highway were closed temporarily for safety reasons. In addition, 15 domestic flights and one international flight were canceled due to the heavy rain.
Flooding alerts for parts of Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan had also been issued. The heavy rain had severely disrupted the power supply, according to the Taiwan Power Company. Since last Friday, a total of 14, 530 households in Taiwan had experienced power outages. Most of the households had their power restored by noon, leaving only 332 without electricity.
