Chi Po-Lin, director of the highly-acclaimed documentary “Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above,” was killed in a commercial helicopter crash earlier this month. One day before the crash, he announced the plan to shoot the sequel to the documentary. His works not only aimed at awakening local people’s awareness about the beauty of Taiwan but also at reminding humans of their destruction on the natural environment.
Following the death of this respected filmmaker, the photos Chi took in March of ACC (Asia Cement Corp.) mining field near Taroko National Park gained new momentum in a petition against the extension of the mining rights of ACC in eastern Taiwan. Environmental group Citizen of the Earth initiated the petition calling on MOEA to revoke the extension mining rights of ACC, which it said was illegal.
