Starting around Christmas, the US is currently on its 10th day of record-breaking frigid temperatures. A severe pressure drop will lead to an explosive winter storm along the eastern US, according to the weather forecast.
A new term, bomb cyclone, was therefore coined by meteorologists. A bomb cyclone is an unofficial term for what is known as explosive cyclogenesis, which occurs when central pressure of a low pressure system falls by 24 millibars in 24 hours. It may bring about violent winds, rain, sleet and snow around the system, sometimes causing severe structural damage. So far, the severe winter storm hitting the eastern US has already claimed 11 lives.
