Online retail giant Amazon was found to be selling doormats featuring the Indian flag, which triggered fury among the Indians. Indian foreign minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted that Amazon should issue an “unconditional apology” and withdraw the “insulting” product in no time. She also suggested that India rescind current visas for Amazon officials and not grant any more if they failed to do so.
In India, desecration of the flag is punishable with fines and imprisonment. Similar controversy over sales of doormats illustrating Hindu gods was found on Amazon website last June. Amazon said it had removed the doormats from its site on January 11.
